The Brooklyn Academy of Music, usually called BAM, is one of the borough’s oldest cultural institutions. The academy was founded in 1861 and moved to its present location in charming Fort Greene in 1908. Today the academy is known for its wide range of programming, which includes cinema, concerts, dance performances, visual arts installations and more. BAM’s many spaces for private events include the 837-seat BAM Harvey Theater and the Howard Gilman Opera House, which can hold up to 2,098 attendees.

BRIC, a community organization that offers free cultural programming throughout the borough of Brooklyn, is headquartered at BRIC House in Fort Greene. The facility’s meeting spaces include a 3,600-square-foot ballroom with a raised stage and retractable seating, the 1,400-square-foot Artist Studio and more.

The main branch of the Brooklyn Historical Society is housed in a terra-cotta and brick Queen Anne–style building in Brooklyn Heights designed by George B. Post, also the architect of the formidable New York Stock Exchange in Manhattan. Meeting spaces include the soaring Great Hall, which can accommodate up to 200 attendees, and the historic Othmer Library, which can hold up to 125. There is also a classroom that’s ideal for smaller groups.

The New York Transit Museum is located in a decommissioned subway station in Brooklyn Heights. Exhibits include all manner of transit vehicles as well as vintage photographs, signage and more. The museum’s platform level, where attendees can board historic subway cars, is among the spaces available for group events of up to 150 attendees.
